Cheat Sheet for the Midjourney Art Generator

Midjourney is a new AI powered art generation application. You interact with it via Discord channel and provide it prompts which it uses to generate art. Below is an example of the kind of art it can generate given a prompt like “empty village”.

An example of Midjourney art

You can try Midjourney free to start, Then if you like what it produces you can subscribe in order to be able to use your images however you like. Midjourney provide helpful documentation here. Other people have also produced some useful guides, These include a getting started guide and a nice guide to getting better pictures. There are also some more specific guides around like this guide to producing portraits that you can find with a little googling.

Using Parameters

There are a few important thing to understand about Midjourney. The first is that the AI may not read your prompt the way you intend. to assist with this you may want to use the :: separator suffix to ensure that your phrase is parsed correctly. You can also choose emphasis by assigning a weight from 0.1 to 10 after the :: (the default is 1). Remember this affects the preceding phrase.

Second is that there are lots of ways to configure the prompt you give it using parameters. You can adjust style, image ratio, trade off run time and quality and a whole host of other options. You can even weight different words in your prompt differently to alter the emphasis of your image. This helps to get the best out of the image generation.

Finally remember that when you run a prompt you will be offered 4 initial images. You can then select as many as you like for further upscaling.

Cheat Sheet

To help you get the best out of this fun new tool and to save you spending credits on images that are not what you intended, I have created a cheat sheet giving the commands and parameters for Midjourney.
